Why Using ECONYL Yarn?

Pollution in the world is an urgent and growing problem, and that’s particularly true of the increasing amount of ocean plastic. Every year, about 12 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean, which is equivalent to dumping a garbage truck of trash into the ocean every minute. Among this yearly pollution, over 640,000 tons of it comes from lines, nets, pots, ropes, and traps used in the fishing industry worldwide. Fishing nets account for one-tenth of ocean waste. Discarded nets can drift for years killing marine wildlife as they go.

At Innovflor® carpet tile we use Aquafil’s ECONYL® yarns made from used fishing nets. Once collected and cleaned, they are physically and chemically broken down and reborn as strong and hardwearing carpet yarns that are used for several of our carpet tile collections.

For every 10,000 tons of ECONYL® raw materials that are created, 65,100 tons of CO2 emissions are avoided and 70,000 barrels of crude oil are saved. Using ECONYL® nylon has the potential to reduce the global warming impact of nylon by up to 90% compared with the material generated from oil. The nylon is produced in a facility that is powered by 100% renewable energy sources, including hydroelectric and wind.
